What does LGBTQ+ even mean ?
The acronym LGBTQ+ is used to refer to different sexual orientations and gender identities that encompass multiple groups. Here is the meaning of each letter:
- π - Lesbian
- π - Homosexual (gay)
- π - Bisexuals
- π £ - Transsexual or transgender
- π - Queer or open to all possibilities
- β - Indicates other identities not explicitly mentioned in the acronym, and symbolizes the diversity of the entire community.
Most of us think we know the origins of the LGBTQ+ rights movement that originated in the United States. Almost all of us have heard of the Stonewall Riots in New York City, or the first pride marches. These momentous events were the foundation of the LGBTQ+ rights movement and many others around the world. But did you know that sex workers also played a huge role in starting and sustaining this movement? π³οΈβπ
What was the Stonewall Riots?
There were gay rights movements before the Stonewall riots, but it was the latter that became the driving force behind LGBTQ+ political activism. Gay and transgender sex workers in the Greenwich Village community were most intensely targeted by the police attacks that took place in New York City in 1969. The streets witnessed heated clashes that stretched over several days, with more than 2,000 protesters involved in the fighting. This historic encounter represented the first American (and arguably world) display of courage by gays and lesbians fighting for their rights. The fight for gay rights was and is inseparable from the fight for sex worker rights, as both movements insist that the government and police have no right to tell consenting adults how to use their bodies and what they can do in their bedrooms. πͺπΌ
βYou know, the guys there were so beautiful β theyβve lost that wounded look that fags all had 10 years ago. It was the first time I had heard that crowd described as beautiful. We reached Cooper Square, and as Ginsberg turned to head toward home, he waved and yelled βDefend the fairies!β poet Allen Ginsberg commented to Gay Sunshine magazine. Today, Gay Pride marches are held annually in late June around the world to mark the Stonewall Riots.
What is the support for LGBTQ+ now ?
The position of the LGBTQ+ community in the adult industry is evolving and dependent on a variety of factors, but it's safe to say that they are currently thriving. However, it also depends on the country and the political situation. But we must never take for granted all the rights that our predecessors fought so hard and bravely for. As we can see in the current political climate, the rights that we think should remain can disappear all too quickly. That's why we must remember that it is so important to have a united front and stand against those who would take away the rights of LGBTQ+ sex workers. Sex work is work. Supporting the rights of sex workers means understanding the diversity and complexity of our lives. Many well-known names have also joined in supporting the LGBTQ+ community, including Jeniffer Aniston, Lady Gaga and, from the Czech scene, Simona Stasova.
There are also many well-known celebrities in the LGBTQ+ community, some of whom you may not have known about. For example, Elliot Page, pre-transition Ellen Page. He first came out as a lesbian and later as a transgender, which was accompanied by a name change. Also, actress Michelle Rodriguez, who confirmed in 2013 that she is bisexual, said, "Men are fascinating. So are women."
